Eeeeek! I’m scared, too. We all are. Today’s video is a quickie, and a must-watch. Let’s get scared babes!

Chronic illness is scary. There’s no getting around that. And anyone who tells you they feel fearless about being sick is, well, probably not being 100% honest with you, or with themselves.

Everyone Gets Scared.

Everyone gets scared. Everyone. Whether you’re newly diagnosed or a seasoned ChronicBabe like me, you will have moments of fear.

You’re afraid you’ll never be well again. You’re afraid of how your illness will impact your family. You’re afraid people will abandon you. You’re afraid of that new bump on your arm.

Life with chronic illness is full of fear-inducing moments. You’re not alone with this.

Can You Sit With Your Fear?

I’ve got a TON of other videos that offer ways to identify fears, conquer them, cope with them, but this video is not one of them.

Today, I want you to do something radical. I want you to sit with your fear.

“Sitting with” something is a concept from meditation, and from Buddhism, and from many other spiritual pursuits. The idea is to simply look at the feeling, instead of trying to fight it or rid yourself of it.

I know, bizarre, right?

Here’s the thing: Fear is just a feeling. It’s a moment of experience that passes along your synapses in the brain. It can be fleeting… but sometimes, we get focused on the fear and it paralyzes us. We catastrophize and imagine all the possible negative outcomes. We obsess. (I’m speaking from experience here…)

How to Sit With It

But if you can sit with your fear—accept that you have a feeling of fear, acknowledge it, and just be still with it for a moment—you’re more likely to be able to move on in spite of that fear.

Let’s try it together. Let’s say I saw a spider earlier, and now I’m starting to worry there’s a nest of spiders somewhere in my vintage Chicago condo, which is full of little cracks and crevices that would make a nice little spider home. Eeeeeeek!

I’ll sit with the fear. I’ll take a moment to close my eyes, and breathe, and say my fear aloud to myself, or in my head: “I’m feeling afraid of spiders.” Just keep breathing. Don’t let yourself explore the fear more deeply; just focus on that simple fear. “I’m feeling afraid of spiders.” Don’t let yourself weave a bigger, more complicated, drawn-out story. Keep it simple.

I see you, fear. It’s OK. You’re just a feeling. There’s not actually a spider on me. This is just a momentary feeling, and it’s fleeting. Goodbye, fear!

If you can press pause for a moment, you can often stop fear in its tracks.

If you can sit with your fear for a moment, it loses some of its power, and you can move on.
