AWAP Wednesday: Home-Based Business Tips for Sick Chicks

Today’s AWAP* question comes from a fellow ChronicBabe, who joins a chorus of voices asking me how I make a go of running a business even though I’m a sicko: “How do you stay motivated?  I know there are lots of forums for people who are self employed/work from home, and that they have great tips. “But having a chronic illness adds an extra dimension of complexity to setting up and running your own business. “So I would really appreciate hearing about your own experiences.” I’ve got five tips for y’all to consider today, which I think offer a nice little primer for anyone considering working from home: *AWAP = As Well As Possible Now it’s your turn: Do you work from home? (Rough) Transcript: Babes, I get lots of questions about running a business from my home, because many of you are doing so — or considering doing so — in hopes of better managing your health. And it’s true that running your own business from home affords you more flexibility to handle work and health issues at once. But working from home is not easier than working anywhere else. It has its pitfalls. I thought today, I’d give you a peek inside my home office, and talk about how to make a home-based business work for YOU. You need a door.  If you think you can run a business from your dining room table, good luck. Mine is often taken over by crafts, and meals. And while I have a chilled-out, supportive partner who doesn’t mind if the table gets crowded, I think he would not love if I were working there all the time. You need a separate space that’s just for your work. I’m lucky that we can work work out a shared office arrangement, and I keep my space organized, because clutter makes my head explode. I love that I get to have my own space! But sometimes I’m bummed that I have to buy all the ergonomic stuff I need to make my desk healthy. AWAP Wednesday: How Do I Handle Fear of Success?

Deep inside of me, there was the awareness that, even if I fit every symptom in the book, I had no excuse to live half a life. Somewhere in there I knew I wasn’t really broken. I was terrified of what my responsibilities would be if I allowed myself to be, truly, whole.’ So, how do you address the fear of being AWAP? If I start to put myself out there and things start to take off… what if I can’t keep up? I’m truly terrified of that!!! AWAP Wednesday: How do I increase my sense of self-empowerment?

Today I’m starting something new: This post is a complete transcription of the video. (A few of you have written in that sometimes listening to videos is hard.) Good day, babes! Today’s AWAP* Wednesday question comes from a fellow ChronicBabe. She writes: “I have a question about self empowerment: How do you cultivate a sense of empowerment while dealing with a chronic illness? What helps you to do that? What things do you do to cultivate it? For example, since struggling to deal with a chronic condition, my own sense of self worth as someone who is worth employing has really taken a nosedive (despite the fact that my chronic condition was acquired through poor workplace ergonomics!). “I was struck by the strong sense of self empowerment you radiated when you answered an earlier AWAP question about disclosing a chronic condition when trying to get employment and I would love to cultivate this quality (of self empowerment) more in myself—how do we value ourselves when employers and workplace culture views disability negatively as a condition that limits people’s ability to be worth employing?” Great question, babe! Self-empowerment is CRUCIAL to being a ChronicBabe—you can’t get ahead in life if you don’t believe in yourself and your power to succeed. Self-empowerment is all about deriving strength and stick-tuitiveness from the inner belief that you know what’s best for you—and that you’ve got what it takes to be amazeballs. I understand what it’s like to doubt yourself, especially when you may have people in your life who don’t understand how hard things are for you and aren’t as supportive as you might like them to be. I have deep moments of self-doubt, and I’ve made wrong turns because I ignored my inner voice in favor of what others thought was best for me. But in recent years, I’ve learned to listen to Mama Jenni waaaay more often, and it has paid off big-time.
